Description

The University of Michigan Law Library seeks a Scholarly Publishing Librarian to join our highly engaged and collaborative team of librarians dedicated to building and preserving one of the most comprehensive law library collections in the country. This opportunity is an excellent one for librarians interested in developing or strengthening their analytical and administrative skills.

The University of Michigan Law School has 82 full-time and 57 part-time faculty, and approximately 1,000 J.D., and 50 graduate L.L.M. and S.J.D. students. With over 1 million volumes, the Law Library has one of the world’s premier collections. The Law Library also has one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of foreign, comparative, and international law materials. The University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, which is considered among the best places in the United States to live and work.

The Scholarly Publishing Librarian is responsible for an array of library management systems, resources, and services incorporating traditional library technology and librarianship skills and advancing the use of emerging technologies.

The Scholarly Publishing Librarian: 

  • Administers the Library Management System (Innovative Interfaces).  Manages, coordinates, and maintains all modules used by the Library, and implements new products and services.
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and solves problems with the Innovative LMS software and communicates with Innovative Interfaces.
  • Administers Library website, coordinates website development, implements and creates new web services and applications, and continuesintegration

    of Library website and the MLaw Catalog.

  • Coordinates the Law School Faculty Publications project and website, including supervising student assistants that research and update the bibliography and websites.
  • Assists in the administration, coordination, and management of work on the Law School Institutional Repository.
  • Manages the addition and maintenance of Law School faculty working papers in the series in SSRN and the institutional repository.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and solves problems with other Library systems, software, and services, e. g., ILLiad, chat reference, EZProxy, LibGuides, electronic resources.
  • Database management for the Library Management System, the website Content Management System, bibliographic software for the Faculty Publications project, and other services.
  • Coordinates access, implementation, and staff education for electronic staff tools, including acting as Chair of the Library Intranet Committee.
  • Acts as liaison with Law School IT and vendors regarding Library staff computing and printing hardware, e.g., Lexis, Westlaw, and Bloomberg.
  • Monitors and evaluates technological innovations, and makes recommendations regarding Library adoption and use of technology.
  • Actively participates in Library digitization projects including active Michigan project to digitize the Law Library’s collection.
  • Handles programming needed to implement new technologies and services or to improve those already in use.
  • Participates in evening and weekend rotation at the Law Library Reference Desk.
  • Participates in unit and Library-wide work, projects, and problem-solving, including as a member of committees and work groups, as assigned.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Supervision Received:  General supervision is received from the Head of Scholarly Publishing & Intellectual Access.

Supervision Exercised: The Scholarly Publishing Librarian may supervise full-time staff and/or students.

Salary:  dependent on education and experience, $53,000 minimum, plus benefits worth 28% of salary.

RequirementsMinimum qualifications:

  • M.L.S./M.L.I.S. or M.I. degree from an A.L.A. accredited U.S. school of information or library science
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and as part of a team
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Flexibility and creativity to be effective in a changing environment
  • Experience creating and revising websites
  • Experience using library management systems
  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of software systems
  • Experience using and familiarity with emerging technologies


Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with Innovative Interfaces’ Sierra  LMS
  • Experience in a large research or law library
  • Experience working with Digital Commons or another repository platform
