IT Managerial Trends: Top Technological trends in Libraries and their Effects

The changing role of management due to evolving technologies and what the library management is doing about it

  • With the increased occurrence of cloud computing and big data concept, IT management is now well positioned to pace into professional tasks and make a positive impact on job.
  • Libraries are no longer rely on manual tasks, IT become a vital part to manage all libraries’ tasks, integrating data and privacy across the organization.
  • Library management is riding the technology wave with artificial intelligence, machinery and natural environment, as the result it enhanced the users’ learning and increased their satisfaction.

Technology in Libraries.

Technology recently becomes buzz words in almost every field of life specially in libraries. It has been around for more than 60 years, but it feels like it’s only been around for a few years. Mostly because these technologies are now be used to solve day-to-day problems.

As Rajesh Ganesan (2019) said;

In the last two decades, technology has really aged well. IT has its challenges; it has its problems. But what is fundamental has not changed. Twenty years ago, you had technology, and you had technology that enabled profession. So, profession could basically try new professional models and reach higher goals.

Libraries are universally known as important social institutions and no organization is considered complete without a library system. With the emerging trends of technologies libraries are facing change like, changing users’ needs, changing information environment or Web/Google that is trying to replace the management section of libraries. Use of Disruptive technologies is resulting in transition from Print to Digital “IT managerial library system”.

Emerging management trends and technologies in library and information services like Library Automation, Digitalization, Institutional Repository and Digital Library Services, Consortia based Services, QR Code, EM and RFID implementation, Open Access, Outreach programs, Reference Management, Open Science, Virtual/Digital Reference Services, Ask the Librarian, Content Management, CAS/SDI services, Profiling System, Discovery Services, Web 2.0 and 3.0 based Services, Use of Social Media, Green Library Concept, to help in Ranking/Accreditation, Remote Login, Cloud computing, Mobile based Library Services, Use of Expert Systems and Robotics, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality Tools and Virtual Reality Tools, Semantics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning and How to be a Smart Librarian by Smart Involvements etc.

Current emerging IT trends effecting library management system very positively. Mostly libraries convert their services according to the need of time. Furthermore, effective leadership is needed specially in this time of challenges and emerging trends, because trending leadership follows trends in their institution.
